The Crow's Nest - March 25, 2016
A very “Happy Spring” to everyone! I can attest to the fact that spring is here – one day the temperature will hover near 50 degrees and the next day we can have snow flurries, high winds and cold, cold temperatures. I guess Mother Nature is testing us to see how we react to the weather’s forever changing ways. Today it has been windy and just plain raw outside. The wind has been whipping in from the west at break-neck speed. Of course, living on the west edge of town we get the full brunt of the wind as it blows down county road 9 into Edinburg. We are fortunate though, as snow was predicted for here today, but it seems the weather stream went further south than predicted. I understand Fargo is getting flurries.
March is the season of sports for this area. Both the A class and B class state tournaments are over. The whole state is either glued to their televisions or physically are at the games. Once again some of the games were real nail-biters. The Class A Girls Basketball Championship team is Fargo Shanley. I’m not positive, but I think they have come out on top quite often! Class A Boys Basketball Championship goes to Minot High. The Class B Girls Championship team was Shiloh Christian and the Class B Championship went to Four Winds – Minnewaukan. Congratulations to all the teams. After the championship game of Four Winds-Minnewaukan versus Shiloh Christian was over, both teams met at the middle of the basketball court and bowed their heads and prayed while holding hands. It was such a beautiful moment to watch the players from both teams come together in such a way. Another great moment at the Class B boys tourney was when the coach from Northern Cass heard that during the half of their game the Special Olympics would be playing basketball for the audience. Rather than going to the locker room the Northern Cass coach had his players stay courtside to watch the Special Olympic teams and cheer them on. What an unselfish, beautiful gesture. Northern Cass fans must be so very proud of their very classy coach and team!
Now it is on to the March Madness with college hoops. “My” team is still in there. That would be the Kansas Jayhawks. As their fans say “Rock-Chalk”! Also, hockey is in full swing trying to make it to the “Frozen Four” to be held in Tampa, FL. Again our UND Fighting Hawks (Sioux to some of us) beat Northeastern today 6-2 so they are a step closer. It is hard to get much done when all these games are on. Thank goodness I can knit or crochet while watching!
Edinburg has seen more than its share of sadness this month of March. It is with a heavy heart I tell you that Audrey Lee, wife of Richard, suddenly died a couple of weeks ago. Audrey and Richard had just returned home from a trip to Arizona, Nevada and other places in the southwest. Bruce Hanson, husband of Betty, passed away last week. His funeral was at Trinity Wednesday morning. Virginia Meyer also died. Her funeral was last Friday. We learned that Randy Levang’s wife, Karen passed away in Mayville last week. Randy has been working at the bank in town for the last few years while his wife was in a nursing home. Then last night, Mike Such from Tollefson Funeral Home called to say Rose Dean had passed away. It indeed makes us stop and think about our own mortality. Sympathy goes to all the families and friends affected by these losses.
On a brighter note, Bernice Flanagan had successful surgery at the Mayo Clinic and is now home recovering as is Rose Denault following knee replacement surgery. I understand talking with Kari (Moe) Larson that her dad, Loren, is doing much better. He has been hospitalized in Arizona with a bad case of pneumonia. Kari is hoping he soon will be able to come home to recuperate.
Greg and Ruth Hall along with daughter Jodi, husband Mike and their 4 children are in Florida having a great time. Mike’s dad and mom are there also. I talked with Ruth tonight and she said they were having lots of fun despite thunderstorms and hail in the area. TJ and Katie Hall and daughter Gianna flew to Nevada to visit TJ’s cousin John Monson and his family. Katie (Monson) and Scott Knobloch and girls are also there visiting. I know they are having a grand time.
We are expecting Gary and Toni Monsebroten home soon from Lake Havasu, AZ. They’ve been gone 3 months so I think we’ll have to have a “welcome home” party!
